Prefácio

This comprehensive book, focused on treating elite

athletes with spinal injuries is a valuable addition to the medical

literature. Treating athletes has unique challenges because

of the high demands, low margin for error, and significant

attention applied to this field. Physicians must be extra diligent

when working up a patient’s case to make sure that nothing is

missed, the diagnosis is made as quickly as possible, and the

treatment begins immediately. The expectations of treating

this type of patient can be overwhelming, due to the external

demands, but at the same time can be very satisfying in

returning a high functioning athlete to peak performance. The

authors deserve commendation for compiling a thorough and

enlightening resource that will benefit all practitioners in this

specialized domain. Treatment for spinal injuries and athletes

continues to evolve just like the sports and the athletes

themselves, this book is a welcome addition to that evolution.
