A particular challenge for Spine surgery in the Sports

setting is how to bridge the gap from the commonly demanded

‘Evidence based’ medical care with its generalizing ‘one size

fits all’ underlying principles to the far more individualized and

usually anecdotally based care applied to athletes to address

their own particular circumstances. There are no simple answers

for this chasm, but the editors of this book deserve great

credit for having taken on this subject from a comprehensive

perspective across different sports and anatomic as well

as clinical conditions. With this book the authors provide a

valuable resource for practitioners as well lay persons alike to

garner insights into generally accepted treatment principles

as well as presenting examples of ‘personalized medicine’ –

which stands as the next evolutionary phase of ‘evidence based

medicine’. May the study of this book enable all of us readers

to pursue the age-old principle of ‘life is motion and motion

is life with new elan and inspiration.
