higher end sports activities making true content experts –

ultimately Spine surgeons -desirable core members of Sports

Medicine management teams. This has become even more

relevant as prolonged absence from exercise and actual sports

activities, which has been a long-time staple of nonsurgical

back care – has become increasingly unacceptable for most

patients. And for professional and collegiate athletes there

can be literally life changing contracts and endorsements at

stake – making long term absences for back problematic and

making early treatment decisions all the more desirable.

Advancements as well as increasing availability of

Neuroimaging and refinements of interventional as well as

surgical techniques have made timely treatment applications

a practical reality. Indeed, some of these refinements have

helped us push the boundaries of conventional Spine care

substantially. Looking back the advent of disc arthroplasty

has been an example of such a surgical advancement which

over the last 20 years has been shown to change the recovery

and outcomes of suitably selected patients. Much improved

tissue sparing less invasive neural decompression surgeries are

another example of an incremental evolution of conventional

Spine surgeries which has changed the treatment paradigms

over the last 2 decades substantially.
